Batur Natural Hot Springs Bali: What to Know Before You Go

Bali Batur Natural Hot Spring 1

I did not plan to spend two hours in a hot spring. Then again, I did not plan to hike Mount Batur at 2 am either. Bali has a way of rearranging your itinerary.

After the Mount Batur sunrise trek, my legs had that deep, heavy ache that comes from scrambling up volcanic rock in the dark. A guide casually mentioned the Batur natural hot springs were ten minutes away. That was all it took.

What I found at Batur Natural Hot Spring was not a tourist trap or a resort pool with a volcano backdrop. It was a series of mineral pools fed by actual geothermal water. Lake Batur spread out below. Mount Batur was still smoking in the distance. I stayed much longer than planned.

Here is what you need to know before you go: entrance fees, best times to visit, pool temperatures, and how it stacks up against Toya Devasya.

What the Batur Hot Springs Actually Look Like

The Hot Spring in Mount Batur

The facility is not glamorous in a resort sense. It is clean, well-maintained, and genuinely beautiful because of where it sits. The pools are man made but fed entirely by geothermal water heated underground by Mount Batur’s volcanic activity.

There are ten pools across the site. Six have direct views over Lake Batur. The water reaches up to 50 °C at the source, but cools to around 40 °C in the pools where you actually soak. That is hot enough to feel therapeutic. It is not hot enough to scald you.

A few pools are dedicated to children. Others are set up as therapy pools where you can direct warm water streams to specific muscles.

The mineral water is volcanic, which means it contains trace elements that are easier on muscles than a standard chlorinated pool. I noticed my skin felt unusually soft afterward.

Best Time to Visit

Right After the Sunrise Hike

Pairing the Mount Batur hot springs with the sunrise trek is the most popular way to do this, and for good reason. The timing works perfectly. Most hikes end between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. The pools open at 7:00 AM.

By the time you come down, find your driver, and arrive, the crowds are still thin. Your muscles are tired. The warm mineral water feels like something your body actively needed. By 10:00 AM, the tour groups will have arrived and it will be much busier.

Weekdays Over Weekends

The Batur natural hot springs get busy on weekends with domestic visitors. If you have any flexibility, go Monday through Thursday. Mid-morning, after the early hikers clear out, is the sweet spot.

The dry season from April to October is the best time for Mount Batur visits overall. Clearer skies mean better lake and volcano views from the pools.

How to Get to Batur Natural Hot Spring

The hot springs are in Toya Bungkah village on the western shore of Lake Batur, in the Kintamani region of northern Bali.

  • From Ubud: approximately 90 minutes by car through winding mountain roads
  • From Seminyak or Canggu: approximately 2.5 to 3 hours
  • From Kuta: approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic

Most people combine the hot springs with a Mount Batur tour, which includes hotel pickup and drop-off. If you are going independently, hire a private driver rather than navigating the mountain roads on a scooter. The inclines are steep and the turns are sharp.

Booking a hotel transfer when purchasing tickets is an option, though it costs more than hiring your own driver through Klook or a local contact.

Batur Natural Hot Spring vs Toya Devasya

Tourists enjoy a traditional holy bathing ritual at Tirta Empul Temple, Bali.

There are two main hot spring destinations at the base of Mount Batur. Both use the same geothermal water source. The experience is different.

Booking a Sunrise Trek and Hot Springs Package

If you have not booked the Mount Batur sunrise hike yet, combination packages make sense. The trek starts around 4:00 AM, reaches the summit by 6:00 AM for sunrise, then descends to the hot springs by mid-morning.

Package tours typically include hotel pickup, a certified trekking guide, breakfast at the summit, and hot spring entry. The whole experience runs roughly 10 hours from pickup to drop-off.

Going DIY means coordinating your own transport at 1:30 AM, hiring a separate guide at the trailhead, and sorting out the connection to the springs after. The package is easier and often not much more expensive.

Last Few Tips

The Batur Natural Hot Springs are one of those simple experiences that land harder than expected. There is nothing elaborate about soaking in warm mineral water next to a lake with a volcano overhead.

But after a predawn hike, with your legs finally relaxing and the morning light coming in over the water, it is genuinely hard to leave. If you are already planning the Mount Batur trek, add two hours here. You will not regret it.
