El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America. It has many hidden gems, a rich history, stunning landscapes, and culture.
Now at a Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions), the US State Department recently upgraded the safety level. El Salvador has drastically improved safety and is now considered as secure as many U.S. cities. It’s a great spot for budget-conscious travelers looking for surf, volcano hikes, and boutique stays, without the crowds.
My journey began with a short flight from Guatemala City to El Salvador’s international airport. Over the course of three days, I discovered why this country is a must-visit destination. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your perfect trip.

San Salvador: My Experience

I arrived in San Salvador, El Salvador, from Guatemala. The contrast between the city and the surrounding volcanoes instantly struck me. I was captivated by the mix of colonial-era buildings and colorful street art.
What To Expect
The energy of the city was undeniable. Street vendors called out the sounds of cumbia music played from passing cars. Locals went about their day with a warm and welcoming demeanor. I felt welcome in their home.

The hospitality of Salvadorans was evident the moment we checked into our Airbnb. This Airbnb was a self-check-in apartment with a gated community. There was also a front desk person who handed us our keys. It was a very nice apartment with a full-set kitchen and nice decor. We had great city views on the balcony and were 3 to 10 minutes away from everything nearby. This was a great choice to make our short day more efficient.
A Hidden Culinary Gem

One of the trip’s highlights was discovering a small hidden mountain food stall. They served the most delicious pupusas I’ve ever tasted. The eatery was tucked away in the mountains with just a few plastic tables. However, the aroma of sizzling masa and melting cheese was irresistible.
Watching the cook skillfully prepare each pupusa, stuffing them with beans, cheese, and chicharrón-was a mesmerizing experience. As I took my first bite, the combination of crispy edges and gooey, flavorful filling was pure perfection. The ‘curtido,’ a tangy fermented cabbage slaw, added the perfect balance, and the homemade tomato sauce tied everything together.
Sharing this simple yet unforgettable meal with our local guide was incredible. It was one of the trip’s most memorable moments. Every other meal I ate was an awakening to my taste buds, and I could not get enough.
Rainbow Slides: Café Albania vs. Picnic Steakhouse

The second day was an adrenaline rush! We experienced everything from zip-lining to sliding down the giant rainbow slide at Café Albania. It was a day of endless adventure. The café was in the heart of El Salvador’s coffee region. It offered more than just great (strong) drinks. It was a full-fledged adventure park.
The highlight was the massive rainbow slide. It sent me speeding down at an incredibly fast speed. I enjoyed the panoramic views of the surrounding hills.
On the other hand, the Picnic Steakhouse was more of a family-friendly restaurant. It had slides and a few other activities. It was not as large as Cafe Albania, and you probably only needed one to two hours there. The slides were also shorter, but nonetheless, they were still fun.
Adventure at Café Albania in El Salvador has a more exhilarating rainbow slide experience. Picnic Steakhouse in El Salvador also has a thrilling but shorter slide. Each destination has its unique features.
Café Albania Rainbow Slide Activities

- Location: Situated in Apaneca, within the scenic Ruta de las Flores region, approximately a 2-hour drive from San Salvador.
- Slide Details: This slide features two connected sections totaling 320 meters, the original 140-meter slide and a newer 180-meter extension.
- Additional Activities: Offers attractions like a bike zipline, surf zipline, and big swing. There is also a maze and a butterfly swing. These additions make it a full-day adventure destination.
Picnic Steakhouse Rainbow Slide

- Location: Located near El Boquerón in Santa Tecla, just a 20-minute drive from San Salvador.
- Slide Details: Home to the original giant rainbow slide that gained popularity on social media.
- Additional Activities: Primarily, there is a restaurant setting with attractions like the Jurassic Picnic for children. However, it offers fewer adventure activities compared to Café Albania. Tripadvisor
Things To Consider
- Accessibility: Picnic Steakhouse’s proximity to San Salvador makes it convenient for those based in or near the capital.
- Comprehensive Experience: Café Albania (around 2 hours away) offers a broader range of adventure activities, making it ideal for thrill-seekers.
If you’re seeking a quick and accessible thrill, Picnic Steakhouse is a suitable choice. For a more extensive adventure with multiple activities, Café Albania is the preferred destination for a day trip.
Beyond the awesome food and exciting adventures, what really hit home was the friendliness of the locals. The street vendor was eager to get me to try this amazing dish. My Uber driver couldn’t help but brag about how far his country has come. And the café owner welcomed us like we were long-lost pals. Every little chat made a big impact!
El Salvador had far exceeded my expectations. Its affordability, rich culture, and welcoming people made it a destination I knew I’d return to.
