Vouliagmeni, Greece: Luxury, Quiet, and Merely 30 Minutes from Athens

I found myself in Vouliagmeni, Greece, for a wedding, a peaceful seaside town that feels like the Beverly Hills of Athens. Just 30 to 40 minutes from the city center, it’s close enough for a quick getaway yet calm enough to feel like a different world.
What Makes Vouliagmeni Special
Vouliagmeni isn’t loud. It isn’t packed. It isn’t touristy. What it is: refined, scenic, and easy.
Locals love this area, especially Athenians escaping the city on weekends. You’ll find tree-lined streets, luxury boutiques, beachfront cafés, and a relaxed, upscale vibe that’s hard to describe until you experience it.
Where I Stayed: The Margi Hotel

Let’s talk about The Margi Hotel, a place that I now tell everyone about.
Aesthetic: Neutral, Coastal, Elevated
From the moment I walked into the lobby, the design made me pause. It’s that perfect Mediterranean look you see all over Pinterest, but it feels even better in person.
Every corner is made for relaxing, by the pool, in your room, at the open-air restaurant, or with a drink at their cozy outdoor lounge.
The Room
I stayed in one of their Signature Suites, which had a private terrace and beautiful natural light. The bed was plush, the bathroom came stocked, and the entire space smelled like eucalyptus and saltwater.
Food & Dining
Breakfast was served by the pool and included Greek yogurt with local honey, fresh fruit, and flaky spanakopita. Their in-house restaurant, Malabar, served the freshest seafood, Greek mezze, and one of the best-grilled octopuses I’ve ever had.
Things to Do in Vouliagmeni (Besides Nothing)
If you’re anything like me, relaxation is the goal, but it doesn’t hurt to have a few gems nearby to explore.
Travel tip #31: Go early in the morning or at sunset when the light is soft and the lake is quiet.
1. Lake Vouliagmeni
This natural lake is literally five minutes from the hotel. It’s famous for its healing mineral waters and thermal springs. You can swim, float, or get a natural fish spa treatment from the tiny Garra Rufa fish that nibble on your skin.
| Activity | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Swimming | Warm, clear water year-round |
| Fish Spa | Natural exfoliation from tiny fish |
| Views | Surrounded by cliffs and greenery |
2. Astir Beach
A private beach club with white sunbeds, high-end service, and blue Aegean views. It’s perfect if you want that luxury beach vibe without heading to Mykonos. Entry requires a reservation, especially in peak season.
3. Walk the Coastline
The walking paths along the coast are stunning. You’ll pass quiet coves, pine trees, rocky outcrops, and seaside tavernas.
4. Dine at a Seafront Taverna
If you leave the hotel for dinner, go to Ithaki Restaurant. It’s a local favorite for seafood and sunset views. Another great option is Matsuhisa Athens (yes, Nobu-style sushi) if you want to splurge a little.
Getting There from Athens
- From Athens City Center: About 35–40 minutes by taxi or Uber (around €25–40 depending on time of day)
- From Athens Airport: Only 20–30 minutes by taxi (about €20–30)
- By Bus: Bus E22 from central Athens stops right in Vouliagmeni, but I’d only suggest it if you’re staying longer than a weekend.
You don’t need a rental car unless you want to explore the larger coastal area. Most things in Vouliagmeni are walkable or a short ride away.
Mykonos vs Vouliagmeni
| Place | Vibe | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Mykonos | nightlife, beach clubs, and fashion | I enjoy nightlife, beach clubs, and fashion |
| Vouliagmeni | calm, elegant, and scenic | quiet beaches, fine dining, and relaxation |
I notice Mykonos feels energetic, while Vouliagmeni gives me a more peaceful escape.
Would I Go Back?
Absolutely. Vouliagmeni gave me everything I wanted: good sleep, fresh food, calming scenery, and a feeling of being tucked away without being disconnected.
It’s perfect for a romantic weekend, a solo reset, or a luxury treat after island-hopping. I’d even skip the islands altogether next time and just stay here longer.
