Some of my coworkers were on that flight, and tragically, they lost their lives in this devastating accident. It’s incredibly heartbreaking to think about the people expecting their loved ones, only minutes away from landing. Then, instead of a joyful reunion, they have to go back home with a huge loss and plan a funeral. They are all gone too soon.
My deepest condolences go out to their families, friends, and loved ones during this unimaginable time. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, and I hope for strength and healing for those left behind. May those we lost rest in peace.

The American Airlines flight, operated by PSA Airlines, was en route from Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. As the plane was on its final approach, it collided with a U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter conducting a training mission from Davison Army Airfield in Virginia. Preliminary reports suggest that the helicopter was flying above its authorized altitude, leading to the collision. (Source: CBS News)
The impact caused both aircraft to crash into the Potomac River. Recovery teams have retrieved the flight data and voice recorders from the airplane. These recorders are expected to provide crucial information for the ongoing investigation. (Source: CNN)
What is a Black Hawk Helicopter

The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is a versatile, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter used primarily by the U.S. military. The Black Hawk is designed for a variety of missions. These include troop transport, medical evacuation, and aerial assault. It has been a critical asset since its introduction in the late 1970s. (Source: BLACK HAWK® Helicopter | Lockheed Martin)
A former Black Hawk pilot on X (@BillAckman) describes the extreme difficulty of flying these helicopters, especially at night. Pilots have limited visibility. They see only in shades of green and black through narrow vision scopes. They try to differentiate aircraft lights from stars and ground lights. Pilots must manage multiple radio frequencies.
They navigate without peripheral vision. They maintain control of the aircraft while tracking multiple planes in the sky. Even a few seconds of distraction can be fatal. The pilot emphasizes that flying these machines is incredibly tough, and night vision goggles (NVGs) make it even harder.
Air Travel Safety: A Perspective
Even in light of this tragic event, air travel remains one of the safest modes of transportation. There is no need to fret yet. According to a study by MIT, the risk of death by commercial air travel was approximately 1 in 13.7 million boardings globally between 2018 and 2022. This is a huge improvement from earlier decades and shows the advancements in aviation safety today.
In 2022, there were five fatal accidents among 32.2 million flights, underscoring the rarity of such incidents. Comparatively, air travel is significantly safer than road travel, with aviation experts emphasizing its safety record. (Source: CNN Travel)
Safety Tips for Air Travelers
While air travel is still very safe, you can still take some proactive steps for personal safety:
- Pay Attention to Pre-Flight Announcements: Even if you’re a frequent traveler, listen carefully to the safety instructions.
- Familiarize Yourself with the Aircraft: Take note of the exits and understand how to use the safety equipment near you.
- Keep Seat Belts Fastened Even When the Light is Off: Always keep your seat belt fastened. This will protect you against unexpected turbulence.
- Stay Informed: Monitor news and updates from airlines and FAA authorities for updates on safety protocols and procedures.
The recent collision near Washington, D.C., is a sobering reminder of the known risks of flying. However, it’s important to recognize that such incidents are exceedingly rare. They should not deter you from flying. They should not reinforce fears you already have.
The air travel industry continually strives to improve safety measures. This ensures that air travel remains a secure and reliable mode of transportation for millions worldwide, including you. Let this be a reminder and reassurance for your upcoming flights that you will be just fine.

It’s super scary to get on the plane today. I couldn’t imagine this could happen and I have a trip planned on Wednesday. How do we live this life?
