Things To Do In Istanbul:
Itinerary & Accommodations

Scenic view of Hagia Sophia and tourist bus in rainy Istanbul street.

Istanbul is a beautiful city with a rich history and culture; there’s so much to explore. Turkey has always fascinated me with its history, culture, and natural beauty blend.

For my Turkey itinerary, I started in Istanbul. The Hagia Sophia amazed me, and the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar blew me away! I also took a quick flight out of the city. I went on a hot-air balloon ride over Cappadocia’s landscapes, and it was an unforgettable experience! Now, let’s dive into all the things YOU can do in Istanbul!

This trip was truly the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. This itinerary will focus on the popular city of Istanbul.

When booking your flights to Turkey, depending on your plans, try to arrive at Istanbul Airport for convenience.

Remember that Turkey is in the GMT +3 time zone, so plan your arrivals and departures accordingly. Before you travel, you can check the latest Turkey Travel Advisory to stay updated on any travel restrictions. Turkey is usually a safe destination, but not always, so make sure to stay informed.

Expected Expenses

Average Cost

You should plan to spend about TRY805 ($43-50) a day on your trip to Istanbul, factoring in all the fun stuff that makes for a good time. This is the average daily cost based on what other travelers have spent while visiting the city.

People who have been there (myself included) say they usually drop around TRY202 ($10-20) on meals each day, minimum, which means you can enjoy all sorts of tasty eats, from street food to classic Turkish shawarma dishes at local spots.

Plus, tourists often set aside about TRY47 ($2.50) for local transport, hopping on trams, buses, or ferries to check out all the cool spots around town without a hitch.

Expect to spend more (way more) if you prefer private transportation like Uber or taxis because they tend to charge much more and sometimes ask for even more upon arrival.

It’s worthwhile to set aside some extra budget for unexpected expenses or special activities, like guided tours or a sunset cruise along the Bosphorus.

Also, the average hotel price in Istanbul for two people for one week costs TRY11,264 ($598), with a variety of accommodations that can cater to different preferences, from budget hostels to luxury hotels, for a delightful stay for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of this colorful city.

Accommodation

The average price for one person’s accommodation in Istanbul is TRY497, reflecting the city’s hospitality sector, which caters to diverse budgets. For two people sharing a typical double-occupancy hotel room, the average price is TRY995, which is a more economical solution than booking separate rooms. This pricing can vary depending on location, season, and the amenities offered by the hotel.

If you’re planning a trip, keep in mind that hotels in spots like Sultanahmet or Taksim Square can get pretty pricey, especially when tons of tourists come around to soak in the awesome culture and sights.

So, it’s a good idea to book ahead and check out different places to get a spot that fits your vibe and budget.

First Day (Day 1-2)

  • Start your day by visiting Hagia Sophia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was once a church. Then it became a mosque. Now, it is a museum.
  • After Hagia Sophia, head to the Blue Mosque nearby, another beautiful mosque with beautiful blue tiles.
  • The next day, visit the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. Here, you can buy souvenirs, from spices and teas to jewelry and carpets.
  • After that, take a stroll through the historic neighborhood of Sultanahmet. You’ll find beautiful architecture there. There are charming cafes and plenty of ‘Instagrammable’ photo opportunities.

Third-Day (Day 3-4)

  • Start with a boat tour along the Bosphorus, the strait that separates Europe and Asia.
  • After the boat tour, head to Topkapi Palace, the former residence of Ottoman sultans. Explore the palace’s many courtyards, gardens, and museums.
  • Next day, visit the Basilica Cistern, an ancient underground water storage system that is now a popular tourist attraction. Look out for the Medusa heads that support two of the columns.
  • Finish your day with a visit to the vibrant neighborhood of Beyoglu, where you’ll find trendy bars, cafes, and restaurants, as well as the iconic Istiklal Street.

Fifth Day (Day 4-5)

  • Start with a visit to the Spice Bazaar, another historic covered market specializing in spices, sweets, and Turkish delights. If you like to shop, this can be an all-day activity.
  • Next, visit the Galata Tower, a medieval stone tower that offers amazing views of the city.
  • After the Galata Tower, take a walk through the neighborhood of Karakoy, where you’ll find cafes, art galleries, and boutique shops.
  • Finally, end your day with a relaxing visit to a Turkish bath or hammam, where you can indulge in a traditional scrub and massage and soak in the hot, steamy room. I suggest you do this at the end of your trip. It is a great way to head back home relaxed.

Travel Safety Tips

My experience in Turkey was complicated. Although I had a great time in certain areas, I feared for my safety and others. Thankfully, I did not go solo. Even with a friend, we found it difficult to navigate.

We were harassed on various corners and complimented excessively and racially on the next. Cappadocia was a breath of fresh air, relaxing and quiet, unlike Istanbul. Here are some things I wish I had known before visiting.

1. Dress and Cultural Awareness

  • Dress modestly to avoid unwanted attention.
  • Carry a scarf for religious sites.
  • Understand local customs and norms, especially in rural areas.

2. Personal Safety and Boundaries

  • Avoid isolated areas, especially at night.
  • Be cautious with strangers and hold firm boundaries.
  • Trust your instincts and remove yourself from uncomfortable situations.

3. Accommodation and Transportation

  • Stay in reputable, well-reviewed accommodations.
  • Use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps (e.g., BiTaksi).
  • Avoid unmarked or unofficial vehicles.
  • Use women-only sections on public transportation when available.

4. Traveling Smart

  • Travel in groups or with a trusted companion when possible.
  • Plan your itinerary and share it with someone you trust.
  • Avoid traveling alone at night, especially in remote areas.

5. Dealing with Harassment or Assault

  • Be assertive and firm if boundaries are crossed.
  • Seek help from nearby shopkeepers, police, or hotel staff.
  • Carry a safety whistle or alarm for emergencies.
  • Know emergency numbers: 112 (general emergency) and 155 (tourism police).

6. Mental and Emotional Preparedness

  • Stay connected with family or friends and check in regularly.
  • Practice self-care and seek support if feeling anxious or triggered.
  • Consider traveling with a friend or joining group tours.
