Jamaica Travel Guide:
Top Things To Do, Eat and See: A girl on horse at Montego Bay margarittaville beach

Montego Bay, or Mo’Bay as the locals call it, surprised me with its breathtaking beaches and unique experiences. During my two-week visit, I fell in love with the laid-back vibe, the food, and the exciting adventures.

Here’s a breakdown of my trip. It includes the must-visit spots and the ‘famous cliff’ where people dive off. There is also a handy travel guide map to help you plan your own Jamaican getaway.

Life’s a Beach!

Montego Bay is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Jamaica. I spent hours lounging on various beaches, sipping on fresh coconut water, and dipping into the warm Caribbean Sea.

Popular Beaches in Montego Bay

  1. Doctor’s Cave Beach
    • Known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sand.
    • Great for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing.
  2. Cornwall Beach
    • A quieter alternative to Doctor’s Cave, perfect for a peaceful day by the sea.
  3. Walter Fletcher Beach
    • It is family-friendly, with calm waters, a water park, and beachside bars.
  4. Dead End Beach
    • A hidden gem with fewer crowds and stunning views of the ocean.
  5. AquaSol Theme Park (formerly Walter Fletcher Beach)
    • Combines beach fun with water sports and activities.
  6. Buccaneer Beach
    • A local favorite with golden sand and a laid-back vibe.
  7. Mahoe Bay Beach
    • It is known for its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful coral reefs.
  8. Rose Hall Beach Club
    • A private beach with luxurious amenities and clean waters.

The Food!

Jamaican cuisine is a feast for the senses, and Montego Bay did not disappoint. Here are some of my favorite foods:

  • Jerk Chicken: I tried this dish every single day, and it is a local favorite. The smoky, spicy flavors were unforgettable. It was especially memorable on the side of the road. I had it with BBQ sauce between two slices of bread. This was after a late night out, and it always hit the spot.
  • Ackee and Saltfish: Jamaica’s national dish. I enjoyed it for breakfast at my friend’s house. It’s homemade and fresh! It is a must-try!
  • Fresh Seafood: I enjoyed grilled fresh fish and lobster at various restaurants while watching the sunset over the water. I also had some great fried snapper.
  • Street Food: Don’t miss the local vendors’ patties, jerk chicken, and fresh fruit.

Nightlife: Rum and Vibes

Montego Bay comes alive at night with its vibrant nightlife. I spent an evening at Margaritaville, dancing to reggae music and sipping on rum punch. For a more local experience, I visited Pier 1. Live bands played traditional Jamaican music. The energy was infectious. I even found myself at a local underground party. It was with a friend’s family and was out of this world. I still remember it to this day.

The Famous Negril Cliffs: Rick’s Café

One of the best parts of my trip was visiting Rick’s Café in Negril. It’s about an hour and a half from Montego Bay. This iconic spot is famous for its cliffs, where brave souls (not including me) dive into the crystal-clear waters below. I watched professional divers perform jaw-dropping stunts before watching others muster the courage to jump themselves. The views of the sunset from the cliffs were absolutely magical.

Other Must-Do Experiences

  • Horseback Riding at Chukka: I rode horses through the jungle and into the ocean. I even ran my ATV into a Caribbean celebrity, but thankfully, it caused no damage. It was a truly unique experience.
  • Dunn’s River Falls: A short drive from MoBay, this cascading waterfall is perfect for climbing and cooling off. I almost died from being a non-swimmer, but it was worth it!
  • Hip Strip Shopping: I picked up handmade souvenirs, local art, and Jamaican spices along Gloucester Avenue.
