TSA vs Clear?

TSA PreCheck is a program run by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that allows expedited security screening for eligible passengers. CLEAR is a private service that uses biometrics technology to speed up the ID verification process and let you skip the ID check line.

Traveling by air has become an essential part of our lives. However, going through airport security can be a stressful experience. Long queues and removing shoes, belts, jackets, and laptops from bags can make anyone anxious.

Being frisked by a stranger adds to the stress. However, two services can make your airport experience more pleasant: TSA PreCheck and CLEAR.

TSA PreCheck is a program run by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that allows expedited security screening for eligible passengers. CLEAR, on the other hand, is a private service. It uses biometric technology to speed up the ID verification process. This allows members to skip the ID check line.

Comparison of TSA PreCheck and CLEAR

To enroll in TSA PreCheck, you must apply online and then schedule an appointment at an enrollment center. You’ll be fingerprinted and asked to provide your ID and payment during the appointment. The application fee is $77.95 (when purchased in a bundle with CLEAR for 1 year) and $85 with TSA (valid for five years).

  • For CLEAR, you can enroll online or at one of their kiosks located at participating airports. You will be asked to provide your fingerprints, iris scans, and your photo ID. The annual membership fee for CLEAR is $179.

  • Both TSA PreCheck and CLEAR offer expedited security screening, but the extent of the benefits may vary. With TSA PreCheck, you can use a dedicated security lane. You can keep your shoes, belt, and light jacket on. You can also keep your liquids and laptops in your carry-on bag. The average wait time for TSA PreCheck is around five minutes.

  • CLEAR offers a similar level of convenience but allows you to skip the ID check line altogether. Once you’re verified, you can go straight to the security screening. The average wait time for CLEAR is around two minutes.

  • TSA PreCheck is available at more than 200 airports across the United States. CLEAR is now available at about 60+ airports and sports venues. However, CLEAR is expanding its reach, and its membership includes access to Hertz car rental and select stadiums.

  • TSA PreCheck and CLEAR both offer significant convenience for air travelers. The choice between them depends on personal preferences. It also depends on travel habits. TSA PreCheck is the more affordable choice, and it’s widely available but may not be as fast as CLEAR. CLEAR is more expensive. It offers a faster and more convenient experience. This is especially true if you frequently travel through airports with long security lines.

Recommendation

In summary, CLEAR may be the better option if you want a faster and more convenient experience. However, if you’re on a budget and don’t mind waiting a little longer, TSA PreCheck is a great option. You don’t have to remove your laptops or take off your shoes. Either way, both programs can make your airport experience much more enjoyable.

Personally, I prefer Global Entry for international trips which also includes TSA PreCheck. You get a 2-for-1 deal and enjoy shorter lines at customs for an extra $25. I consider this to be very worth it. It also lasts for 5 years.

I highly recommend you get the Global Entry if you have chosen the TSA PreCheck option.
